Back

I can barely understand
My own handwriting
Let alone my fucked up mind
Like I'm rolling around
On the very same bedsheets
That make my scalp itch
In a cloud of cigarette smoke
I can hear morning birds chirp
I can see the sun rise
Without a wink of sleep
I wonder why they say
Sleep is the cousin of death
When not getting any will
Kill you quicker
As I dread the coming day
In rush of a returning night
To drink away
Stayin' awake is
The real motherfucker
Bathed in a great deal of denial
This tub is my home
With every ounce of
Whiskey tainted water
That splashes from my dropping
A bottle only makes this moment
That much sweeter

Strong write Anthony...I specially like the irony here:

To drink away
Stayin' awake

dang dude...rough night...and stayin awake can be tough...esp when you know it will only get worse if you close those eyes...

Without assistance, ahem...I can't sleep. I have my ways of slaying the beasts that tend to attack when I close my eyes...whiskey works well too. Feel your pain, poet!

Like sprinkling holy water on sacred documents... a different kind of blessing. You really dug into your words well, Anthony!

heavy imagery...darkness is there while asleep or awake...and it's like you pose a question: which is the lesser of the two nightmares.
Love this:
Sleep is the cousin of death
When not getting any will
Kill you quicker
Great job!

ugh...hard night...Bathed in a great deal of denial...too much drinking to forget..and still..the pain is mightier than sleep..

i feel your pain... been there, done that... it's brutal. this is a great write, perfectly captures the frustration, despair, endlessness of those nights.

Well written. The bottle is a depressant and so dropping it breaks the cycle. Visceral and clear imagery.

The subject of sleep and dreams (mostly the lack of) is one of my favorites. You've captured the powerful images and crazed thoughts perfectly.

Great job, Anthony, as always. j

I like the way the lines come in short, quick & harsh like a shot of whisky.

This poem is absolutely ace. I love the way the words flow and definitely understand where you are coming from.
You are one of my favourite poets at the moment.

The nights always seem never ending too when you can`t sleep. The minutes seem to pass by in slow motion. Wonderful imagery. I can almost sense the anger, frustration and sleep deprivation too. A great write :)

My dad used to say that he will sleep when he is dead. Sadly he is sleeping now with the angels.

Wow! Powerful, moving, and tragic. Makes me want to try and rescue this person, to be very honest, hahaha. But is rescuing truly within any human's power?

I really enjoyed this, and I look forward to reading more.

"The plan was to drink until the pain over. But what's worse, the pain or the hangover?" I love the hip-hop reference in this. Love this whole thing, actually.
