Plastic Bears

So thoroughly concrete
Set in hearts of Appalachian dwellers
Pour strychnine in open wounds
Lay life on line for Jesus
Read Mark 16 15th verse
Satisfy serpent handlers
Whom shall get bitten
Body swells black & blue
Family places Bible on balloon belly
Poison strong enough to kill
20 men run through faithful veins
Prayers upon the man with 25 copper heads
"And if they drank any deadly thing
They shall lay hands on the sick
And they shall recover"

I have tried this metaphor and never been able to pull it off; you did and did very well. Nice OSW

@Booguloo No, you're wrong. It's Mark Chapter 16 verses 15-18.

Pretty nice...works well when read aloud. Good job at putting a different slant on a familiar verse.

And it's all rock and roll to me! I sort of thought this was funny in a macabre way. Blending all that voodoo that you do so well :)
Good work, Anthony.

Deep and well executed. Thank you for sharing!

I read this yesterday and have been trying to think of what to say. You've written about something that is seen by many as courageous and by others as potential death sentence, which in many cases it has been. Either way, what a poem!

This is heavy. Well done.

I am in agreement with Adam and obviously with a lack of words. :)

Faith is often a difficult topic to write about. For me, at least. This narrative is a good approach.

Great subject matter - snake oil selling/snake dancers - great take on it.

Horrendous image. I'd say I prefer martyrdom but horror is horror. They say not to put God to the test. I wouldn't put me to the test. Presumption sucks, so does the outcome.

Well done!
