Untitled II

believe the words
these walls echo
when God speaks
in sign language.

Love is immortal
as the essence of a mother
no matter how many times
it has drifted away like buckets
in a river where everyone
washes their hair.

Nice. Great opening set with the words echoing from sign language. Nice double play on "sign" as well, considering God reveals through signs often. Love is immortal (i agree) but cool play with the extended metaphor. If you play with it a bit love is the river where everyone washes their hair, makes a cool statement too.

So often I see in your poetry the strength of your mother and the profound positive influence she has had in your life. We watched the Warriors celebration when they got back to Oakland and I was so impressed by words from Draymond Green, his mother, and Marshawn Lynch about that important relationship. Beautiful.

I am so appreciating this prompt and the responses. That first line is so strong...The words the walls echo- and sign language of God...yowsa! Reading today, writing tonight...maybe. You know...Summer. ;)

Sweet as honeysuckle, but honest as a hug, this one sings, swings, swaddles, & struts, with a lot of the "real" you revealed; very nice.

I adore the first stanza, Anthony, which does not detract from the power of the second. Lovely.

This is simply profound - the exuberance of youth but with the insight of deep maturity. I enjoyed reading this several times and appreciating the nuances of the two different stanzas - all seem to hearken to old rituals, deep abiding mother's love, signs and wonders - wonderful write.

I absolutely love the opening about God speaking in sign language--YES. Such a beautiful poem.

I like it much. Hope you won't mind that your words inspired a remix:

I believe God is Love,
the Great Mother —
the river her blood,
the trees her hair.

Hoping that this time my comment will be accepted by your site. Sorry, I read this last night but was unable to leave a comment.
I too find the bond with your mother really moving, but it's subtly done - the endless love of a mother, that river metaphor... and succinct too! Brilliant!

Wonderful word choices. I like this a lot; love your inclusion of both God and mother. Peace, Linda

This is fabulous, Anthony! Trying to read "God's sign language" and the" immortal love of a mother" are universal themes you expressed eloquently here.

The idea of God expressing something in sign language....that image and play on words...so beautifully clever and worded expertly.
