Hyphema

In the eyes of a leader
seeing the face of the devil
as you're writing scripture
pressing your hand against the page
to see the image clearer
startled at the resemblance
forgetting the words to your scripture
like looking at a mirror on the ground

what do you say to yourself when every sign of
aging, fear, doubt and anxiety are in full view
farthest from vanity at a pisser's angle?

parts of this made me think of martin luther and what he saw in that castle when translating scripture

Loved it from the beginning into that final twist. Mad me think.

That ending is a fabuloust twist. (No pun intended). The relection in the toilet below is stark contrast to the page being a mirror in your poem. That's the subtle stuff I find brilliant about your work. Bravo sir, bravo!

As someone who 'takes the piss' (is that an international saying or just Oz? Don't know.) I can relate. As someone wracked with doubts, the coat fits very well.

That last question is almost totally gender-specific; the girls don't get the questionable benefit of that angle on things!

I love the question in this, what do we say to ourselves? Sometimes it is simply stubbornness that gets us through.
At any angle. :)
